What Is a Root Canal?
Root canal treatment (RCT) is a therapy that eliminates infection affecting the inside of your tooth. This infection occurs when harmful bacteria enter the tooth due to decay, broken fillings, or an injury. This treatment helps retain the remaining natural structure of your tooth as much as possible.
Symptoms of a Root Canal Infection
Toothache is not the only indication you have an infection. Signs you need a root canal include:
- Darkening of tooth enamel
- Lingering sensitivity to temperatures
- Swollen gums around the affected tooth
- Toothache when applying pressure on the area
What to Expect During Root Canal Treatment
When it comes to dental infections, it is critical to understand each one is unique. Root canal treatment can differ for each individual and even from one tooth to another for the same person.
Below are the steps involved in the RCT procedure:
- Dr. Harris will take x-rays and all needed imaging of the infected tooth.
- We will then administer an anesthetic to numb the area and make you feel at ease during the procedure.
- Our dentist will then create an opening in the tooth to remove the infected tissue from the pulp. The pulp holds the nerves and blood vessels in the tissue inside the tooth.
- We will then clean out the pulp chamber and root canals.
- The chambers are then filled with an antibacterial material and sealed with a filling.
- On the final visit, Dr. Harris will complete your restoration with a crown for long-lasting protection.
What Happens After My Root Canal Procedure?
A few days after your procedure, the affected tooth might still feel sensitive. You can use over-the-counter pain medication or anti-inflammatories to relieve discomfort. We recommend you don’t chew on that side until your permanent crown is placed.
Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?
No, a root canal will remove your tooth pain. When the nerves get inflamed by infection, they cause severe pain. RCT removes the infection and preserves the healthy part of your tooth. In most cases, it will not cause additional discomfort.
Is RCT Safe?
A root canal procedure is a safe and effective treatment for eliminating bacteria from the infected tooth roots. It prevents the infection from spreading to other teeth or entering your bloodstream. If the bacteria enter the bloodstream, it might have harmful effects on your overall health.
Our practice takes a conservative approach. We always preserve your natural tooth structure as much as possible with root canal therapy and use extraction as a last resort. If you have a tooth with irreversible damage, we will remove this tooth before the infection spreads to the neighboring teeth.
Socket Preservation After Extraction
This is a type of bone grafting. If we do need to extract one of your teeth, the extraction leaves a small hole that is vulnerable to shrinkage. To preserve the bone in this area, we perform a socket preservation procedure. This treatment involves adding new material into the empty socket. We can use your own transplanted bone tissue or other materials designed specifically for grafting. This way, we protect the empty tooth socket and prevent bone loss.
